  1. Doesn't make the pain of Saturday's loss any less. In fact, its worse given the fact we would be hosting thwe NFC Championship game.

For those old enough to remember, the only thing that even comes close to the Saints' loss this past weekend, at least for me. was in '83 when Mike Lansford and the Rams kicked a FG as time expired in week 16, thereby depriving the Saints of their first winning season AND first playoff spot.

Gonna be rogh in these parts until the Superbowl is over.

    1. I'll be the heretic and say that I thought going there was a major chance they would lose. I never dreamed it would happen the way it did, Teams with 5 turnovers, 4 net just don't have a much chance to win. The fact we came back was a testiment to the fact San Fran has a mediocre offense but those 4 ended possessions cost us at least 7 points IMHO.

And to have the defense collapse at the end….

      A few random thoughts:

The reason Payton starts Ingram over Chris Ivory is Ivory is not a receiving threat while Ingram is. Once PT got hurt it essentially took Ivory out of the game since PT running and catching sets up what Ivory brings. Surely San Fran noticed the Saints rarely, if ever, passed with Ivory in. I wonder why he did not exploit his own tendencies.

We got to upgrade the linebacking corps and that includes Jonathan Vilma, who I think is a decending player due to the knee injury earlier in his career. Vilma's tackle total has decreased dramatically since 2008 and in the vast majority of 4-3 schemes the middle linebacker should be the team leader or damn close to it.

Scott Shanle is the other decending player that must be replaced IMHO, either by a lineback we already have, free agent or draft pick. Since 2008 his total tackles have also decreased around 25%.

Yeah, Gregg Williams blitzed a bunch when he got here in 2009 but the trend is unmistakable.

  2. Don't disagree with much of what SOP wrote.

The thing that hurts the most is that you needed one stop against team that was as poorly equipped to score 2 touchdowns in 4 minutes as I have ever seen. This want Montana, Young, Rice, Taylor, Roger Craig, Brent Jones, Freedir Solomon or Dwight Clark out there. They had one receiving threat and we allowed the guy to get single coverage against Stenkins who has played awful this year (no interceptions as a free safety is inexcusable). Just play good damn defense and let them try and kick 50 plus yarder to TIE!

I agree the defense played lights out for 95% of the game, but these opportunities (meaning having a legit chance at the Superbowl) don't come around all that often. There was a 3 yr. drought between the NFC Championship game against the Bears and the Superbowl.

I worry we will regress next year in order to fix the defense. I just hope we try to fix the defense. We need a Sammy Knight/Darren Sharper type player at free safety. Ed Reids are few and far betweeen, but we don't need an Ed Reid. We need a free safety who can make "a" play,

Aghh…..oh well… move on to next year.

    1. Part of the answer on the lack of INTs for Jenkins lies in the fact his tackle total has increased a good bit from 2009. Someone has to make the tackles the linebackers aren't. His quickness means he is essentially the 9th man in the box but I also think it cost him in coverage over the course of the season.

Is Jo Lonn Dunbar ready to step up and add 50 or so tackles to the 77 he made this past year? If not we need to find someone like Curtis Lofton who Atlanta snagged with a second round pick.
