I’ve been having some technical difficulties but finally knocked those out yesterday afternoon. I’ve also spent some time lately improving technical back office issues here at Slabbed including a better security perimeter as Slabbed has been subject to at least one denial of service attack in the past 6 weeks. The streets of information dissemination aka the news biz are mean indeed.
That has worked out OK though since the local news cycle has been slow but today the dam has broken and we have links galore. In the interest of time I’ll do this in one post so let’s start with Margie Seemann of the Jefferson Parish Citizens for Good Government. Margie, her sister and the gang at CFGG are true public servants and today the issues with campaign finance so often highlighted by CFGG go front and center in the NOLA.com series Louisiana Purchased. Let’s start with a video interview of Margie:
For those that missed it I highly recommend as a companion to the above last night’s episode of Errol and the Noisemakers as Errol and his crack panel of seasoned journalistic professionalsTM were on fire last night.
Last year’s restructure of the Times Picayune along with the advent of the Lucky Coin Today has resulted in the Balkanization of the local media congroovancy (to borrow a term from Editilla). Worth noting is Tom Benson cuddled up with the Newhouse clan while the folks at Team Georges are nestled in with Belo soon to be Gannett’s Channel 4 WWL TeeVee. The term Balkanized is appropriate here because of the twisted sub alliances with certain new media/alternative media outlets. Why anyone else would allow themselves to be Balkanized by the likes of Tom Benson and John Georges is completely beyond me but I do find it is eerily reminiscent of the following:
Slabbed will remain like Switzerland and continue on as before. Now for some other links:
Follow the money to Cossich, Sumich, Parsiola & Taylor and the reason Burglass & Tankersley got this work comes far clearer focus according to talk amongst the Winos and Gutter Punks at Lafreniere Park.
I have not spoken to Steve Newhouse though some curious visitors from Jersey occasionally pop up reading Slabbed. In fact, the last thing most people want publicized is the fact they have spoken to Slabbed New Media. That list of names is long, distinguished, occasionally infamous and in fact would be surprising, perhaps even shocking to the readers of this project.
I do have the Wino’s permission to reveal her name after her death (which hopefully will not come to pass for many, many years). Otherwise my lips are completely sealed. (See how easy it is not to lie?)
I’m intrigued by John George’s business plan of going head to head with the Times Picayune in New Orleans, a business strategy that literally bucks 30 years of industry consolidation trends. The talent Georges has poached from NOLA Media Group to beef up the New Orleans edition of the Advocate did not come on the cheap. Since the Newhouse pay scale is reputed to be the industry’s most generous, even in these austere days for the print media business, the employee morale impacts of that fact regarding the newbies in NOLA on the staff in Baton Rouge is undeniable as journalists are only human too:
Maybe we’re the Buffoons here at Slabbed for failing to see the wisdom of making a major investment in a declining industry in a declining advertising market. In the construction market, when this type of thing happens it is usually a strategic play where one of the two competitors ends up buying the other out. History tells us that the Newhouse clan will not sell the Times Picayune.
The winner is usually the one with the most net worth to throw away in the competition. Using that metric alone indicates Georges is pissing in the wind since assets in a declining industry can usually be bought on the super cheap via auction. We’ll see.
It will be interesting to see the impacts of the scandal ridden video poker industry having a major Louisiana daily newspaper. Here is our first hint as the following broke in John George’s new newspaper earlier this week:
While I’ve been away for a few days Jason over at American Zombie has been on fire with the latest news that Aaron Bennett is helping Team Fed. Also of great interest is his work on the oil spill’s impacts here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast that qualifies as a must read. Our politicians here in Mississippi have been in bed with BP since the beginning, especially current gubernatorial candidate Phil “Phildo” Bryant, who has consistently downplayed the deleterious environmental impacts of the spill beginning with his now infamous lawn mower fumes remark last summer that was beyond ignorant.
Finally Jason’s post on John Georges property tax assessment in Kenner is the part of a story line that has not yet been fully developed. The general subject of Lawrence Chehardy era sweetheart property tax assessments in Jefferson Parish for the politically connected is a rich topic IMHO. Let’s take things a step further as I think industrial zoned properties, especially along the Mississippi River, would be where the big money is.
One naturally wonders how much lower taxation would be in Jefferson Parish if everyone paid their fair share.
Criminal Malfeasance, as defined by the Legislature and understood here in Jefferson Parish, has a dual definition:
FIRST THE LAW… apparently enacted to stay in a book and not be applied:
1) RS 14:134 SUBPART F. OFFICIAL MISCONDUCT AND CORRUPT PRACTICES
§134. Malfeasance in office
NOTE: §134 eff. until Aug. 15, 2011. See Acts 2010, No. 811, §1.
Malfeasance in office is committed when any public officer or public employee shall:
(1) Intentionally refuse or fail to perform any duty lawfully required of him, as such officer or employee; or
(2) Intentionally perform any such duty in an unlawful manner; or
(3) Knowingly permit any other public officer or public employee, under his authority, to intentionally refuse or fail to perform any duty lawfully required of him, or to perform any such duty in an unlawful manner.
The ‘Little Man’ Uncle Carlos (as in Marcello) must be all a glee in his grave to think that the political elite of Jefferson Parish have chosen as their persona, wannabe wise guys, just like his ‘family’ of the past.
And what about this thing, this MAFIOSO thing, that attracts our Parish politicians: from Judge to Parish President, from Council member to Clerk of Court, from a Chief of Police to School Board member, from Mayor to State legislator? Jefferson Parish’s Political establishment’s shocking and disturbing characterization of themselves, both in public projection and by emulating the “Thug Mentality” associated with a mafia family does in fact identify these individuals with what the adopted analogy implies, ORGANIZED CRIME!
Simply stated another way, we have a entrenched, incestuous, arrogant, self-entitlement, retirement junkie Politico Class that do what they ‘wanna do…whatz youz going to do about it?’
