I’m not sure exactly where to start….

Slabbed has an embarrassment of riches and I do not have the time this morning to do any of it justice. In no particular order:

  1. Last week Slabbed was told by a source connected to Diamondhead City Government that Bay St Louis City Clerk Sissy Gonzales had interviewed for the City of Diamondhead Treasurer position with the Assistant City Manager in Diamondhead and that she would be leaving the Favre Administration. The agenda for the next Diamondhead City Council meeting indicates the Treasurer’s position would be authorized to pay up to $60,000. I would look for Gonzales to take the money and run.
  2. Last night, the Bay Waveland School Board by a 3-2 vote extended the contracts of Superintendent Landry and her brother John McGraw the business manager by four years.  Those voting yea were Bell, Kidd and Thomas.  The action was taken after a lengthy executive session and according to one of the trustees in the executive session not authorized to speak for the School Board the action was taken against the advice of School Board Attorney Ronnie Artigues. The contract extensions were not listed on the School Board meeting agenda in advance of the meeting according to Lana Noonan of the Hancock County Alliance for Good Government, who also attended the School Board meeting.
  3. Just weeks ago New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu was the darling of the national media with the New York Times even pumping Landrieu as a national political candidate after he removed the Confederate monuments from public display. Later today Slabbed will join the feeding frenzy on the Landrieu flash flood thanks to a reader that took an observation I made on Twitter to its natural conclusion. It is my hope the local media that has their teeth sunk into Mitch Landrieu’s hiney saves a bit of space for Slabbed to take a bite. 😉  This also illustrates why you should never get your local news from a national news outlet.

It is my hope the readers advance public knowledge of items 1 and 2 in comments, especially item 2, because the local school board really stepped out last night.

Comment Bump: Grandpa Grimm’s bedtime story

From Tuesday Roundup: “We Were Robbed by the System”.

A very loyal source within SRHS told me that Holland has his own secret agent woman! Yes! SRHS now employs spies (double agents). Let Grandpa Grimm tell you a little bedtime story…

Once upon a time, not so long ago, there was a woman who was a contract employee with SRHS, “G”. Her work with this world class facility began with her teaching a class here and one there. Now, keep in mind that these classes did not require a vast amount of skill or expertise; in fact, almost anyone could have taught them. But, you see, this individual had the inside advantage, (she went to the same church as Holland and his crew). She wasn’t a dynamic speaker, nor a vigorously engaging facilitator, but to Holland she was the cat’s meow. To the employees she was nothing more than another one of Holland’s “favorites”.

Several years ago, when the economy started its downward turn (coincidentally, the same period SRHS went on its huge spending spree), “G”, a contract employee came to see Holland (then COO) to woo him into making her a permanent FTE. The entire basis for her request was that her husband “might be losing his job in the summer” and…”if, he loses his job, her family would need insurance”. Holland immediately called HR and they agreed based on this POSSIBILITY, she should be made permanent FTE.

As in the usual practice for the hand-picked individuals and made up positions at SRHS, the job was posted AFTER the fact and quickly taken down and she was immediately announced as a new Director of Guest Relations. Just like that King Holland made a decree in h is Kingdom and so it was done.

In her new role, she was to be over guest/patient experiences. She very rarely visited guests in their rooms, she didn’t round on a daily basis to new admits, she refused to handle complaints. Basically, she stayed in an office and ran reports that SRHS paid a company a great amount of money to produce. She would then present them at meetings for King Holland and jester Anderson. I won’t bore you with all the parties she planned and money that was wasted on trips here and there, or the classes she taught that were so old and backdated from the 70’s. But alas, we must keep in mind, she had a very limited skill set to begin with after all. Continue reading “Comment Bump: Grandpa Grimm’s bedtime story”

I hear A. J. Giardina was in town today

And the legal fight brewing between the Bay Waveland School District, New Orleans developer Jim Macphaille and singer Rochelle Harper is gonna make the local TeeVee News. The subject is complex and comes with requisite cronyism and incompetence. Hopefully Giardina does not butcher it.

One naturally wonders why Hancock County beat reporter Al Showers does not have this story for WLOX but maybe he took the day off to pay his severely late water bill. More on that later today.

Boss Hogg crony Ashley Edwards named executive director of the Hancock County Port and Harbor Commission

Welp folks, hell must be freezing over as Hancock County has evidently run out of home grown political hacks and cronies to staff one of the local troughs.

Hancock port board endorses governor’s staffer as new director ~ Anita Lee

Hiring unqualified good ol boys to government jobs in Mississippi is nothing new as we’ve been reminded of late of that fact with DMR among other agencies but for a local plum appointment to go to an outsider in Hancock County is unheard of, especially when the board doing the appointing answers to the County Board of Supervisors.  Yes, of late local politics has made for strange bedfellows with Supervisor Steve Seymour crossing party lines to cuddle up with Lynn Fitch over at Scott Walker’s house last year but plucking a Phil Bryant staffer for a $150,000 job that could (some would say should) go to someone with the Ladner surname? OMG!!!

I did not jump right on the emerging story linked in comments by Mad as Hell on Sunday because I knew two things:

Rotten to the core: Attorney General Jim Hood’s office also feeding at the DMR trough

Mississippi assistant attorney general’s sons benefitted from grant he applied for at DMR ~ Paul Hampton

And in story comments and in periodic emails I’ve been hearing terms like mass protest, naked protests and about any other form of protest there is. All I can say is it has been a while since I have covered mass acts of a mob of angry citizens but I’m game if you guys are as the reasons for Jim Hood turning a blind eye to improprieties in the Coastal Impact Assistance Program come into much sharper focus.

Change some of the names and you got Jefferson Parish…..

You know folks maybe I was being a bit hard on Mike Fawer for bringing the Renee Gill Pratt portion of the Dollar Bill Jefferson saga to trial.  Make no mistake, Fawer abrasive style will insure Gill Pratt gets the book thrown at her but the testimony this past week gives the public another good peek into the way business is conducted in the NOLA metro area thus the title of this post.

For our many readers that are not in this area who are hooked on our Jefferson Parish coverage we’ll start with a must read in the Times Picayune story Gill Pratt racketeering trial offers glimpse into inner workings of a political machine. The unbridled greed is breathtaking and provides probably the best reason for banning earmarks since it appears most of it is looted out by cronies of corrupt politicians who are incapable of making an honest living.

Next up is T-P columnist Stephanie Grace who wrote a column on the testimony of two DaimlerChrysler execs in Gill Pratt’s trial last week. This is also a must read as Grace describes the impact of these prosecution witnesses on the Judge and jury: Continue reading “Change some of the names and you got Jefferson Parish…..”

Meantime the gang over at West Jefferson Medical Center lives the high life on the trough

Hat tip to Mr CLS who duly noted:

Colleagues and Camaraderie Were In Order

Appropriate title while one awaits the sentencing of Bill Hubbard on Thursday, January 20, 2011. Mr. Hubbard received and deposited checks from Jefferson Parish signed off by Parish President Aaron Broussard and then Finance Director Nancy Cassagne before leaving that position for CEO of West Jefferson Hospital an a nice 6 figure salary.

The menu was nice as Mr CLS noted per T-P society pumper Nell Nolan:

Among the slew of gourmet goodies were shrimp remoulade canapes, devils on horseback (wrapped Spanish chorizo encrusted in medjool dates), a Cajun baked brisket, and praline cheesecake in a chocolate cup. The Times Picayune updates Karen Parker’s firing. Trahan’s old position eliminated. Thomassie curbed.

Paul Rioux updated his breaking story we covered yesterday to include a few of the other non-paralegal paralegals that we profiled on last Thursday in our help wanted post. In this latest update we also find the Parish has decided it can get by with a few less non-paralegal paralegals as Paul explains:

The parish also eliminated part-time paralegal positions held by sports radio personality Ken Trahan and Jefferson Parish Constable Tony Thomassie; both actually worked in other departments.

Trahan, who resigned his $18,000 job Jan. 21, worked in the public information office and had worked with Broussard to establish the Saints Hall of Fame Museum in 1988. Trahan could not be reached for comment.

Thomassie, who was fired from his $15,000 paralegal job Friday, actually worked in the department of inspection and code enforcement. He declined to comment. Continue reading “The Times Picayune updates Karen Parker’s firing. Trahan’s old position eliminated. Thomassie curbed.”
