You know folks maybe I was being a bit hard on Mike Fawer for bringing the Renee Gill Pratt portion of the Dollar Bill Jefferson saga to trial. Make no mistake, Fawer abrasive style will insure Gill Pratt gets the book thrown at her but the testimony this past week gives the public another good peek into the way business is conducted in the NOLA metro area thus the title of this post.
For our many readers that are not in this area who are hooked on our Jefferson Parish coverage we’ll start with a must read in the Times Picayune story Gill Pratt racketeering trial offers glimpse into inner workings of a political machine. The unbridled greed is breathtaking and provides probably the best reason for banning earmarks since it appears most of it is looted out by cronies of corrupt politicians who are incapable of making an honest living.
Next up is T-P columnist Stephanie Grace who wrote a column on the testimony of two DaimlerChrysler execs in Gill Pratt’s trial last week. This is also a must read as Grace describes the impact of these prosecution witnesses on the Judge and jury: Continue reading “Change some of the names and you got Jefferson Parish…..”
A crook is a crook is a crook regardless of party affiliation folks and we live that mantra here at Slabbed. The congressman of the slabbed, New Orleans native Gene Taylor, well understands this too which is why he was one of the few early innovators in the House of Representatives over that corrupt sack of shit that is New York Congressman Charlie Rangel. I suspect the occasional hit pieces from the far left of Gene’s own party that occasionally land in the media are no doubt related to his stance on Rangel needing to resign but history and his constituents will judge Gene kindly on this matter IMO. Given what’s out there in the political world its nice to have a guy in DC looking out for us here on the coast that is honest.
New Orleanians on the other hand have long had a penchant for sending the most dishonest people they could to DC and the results show. The local Dems are doing it again backing a corrupt political hack in Cedric Richmond against Joe Cao for Bill Jefferson’s old house seat. Frankly it is mind boggling, especially given the fantastic investigative journalism going on over at Damabala’s place, the American Zombie where he has chronicled Richmond looting a charity with Ike Spears in a way they certainly learned from the Jeffersons. Dambala’s work has thus far been ignored by the NOLA area media who evidently thought they had that luxury in 2010. I think it was a collective miscalculation.
The commentary to Dambala’s posts on the topic have been interesting as there are some evidently otherwise intelligent folks who appear to subscribe to the theory that a crook from my political party is better than an honest man from the other. I’ll pull the lever for the honest man every time and plan to support a gentleman for Gov here in Mississippi that is both honest and Republican. It is the same reason I don’t think twice voting for Gene. Continue reading “Zombie we feel your pain. At least James Gill has come to the Cedric Richmond Party.”
Hat tip Editilla.
Dambala over at American Zombie has been doing some great investigative work lately involving LA State Rep Cedric Richmond. He wrote this:
For the past four months, I’ve been researching a tip I received on current 2nd District Congressional candidate, State Rep. Cedric Richmond. I was told that Rep. Richmond took a chapter out of the Mose/Bill Jefferson playbook and set up at least one 501c3 (non-profit), then bilked the organization’s cash flow for personal use.
I think we have some stuff up on Slabbed that can help fuel the fire. I welcomed Ike and Sonja Spears to Slabbed and highlighted his connection to Dollar Bill and family. I imagine Ike was a member of that political machine. Jim Letten has the goods on Sonja Spears yet has not released an indictment despite the slam dunk case he has against her. Sonja is Ike’s wifey. This could also tie into them rumors we keep hearing about Civil District Court. Continue reading “To amplify some of Dambala’s recent posts. Follow the money folks.”
We have some filings in USA v Perdigao we found interesting. Before I get to them I’m going to back up and provide some links so our new readers can catch up on this case. Quite simply this complex of cases has all the makings of a first class Louisiana political scandal that makes the Dickie Scruggs saga look like childs play. We also welcome our new readers including those from NASA, NOAA, The State Department, Texas and Universities across the country too numerous to count.
For case background I would start here and here though Nowdy tells me her favorite Sop post title of all times (that happens to be our first on the subject) is here. For my money Nowdy’s post on the subject here is excellent. James Gill, columnist for the New Orleans Times Picayune boils the case down well as we profiled here:
Perdigao alleged that Guidry, his client at Adams and Reese, bought himself a break by giving $1 million to U.S. Rep. William Jefferson, D-New Orleans, long-time mentor to then-U.S. Attorney Eddie Jordan. Continue reading “We Have Some New Filings in USA v Perdigao: Welcome to the Party Mr Guidry”
To DC from Alexandria Virginia that is. He ought to check with the Judge Ellis if there is a family plan. Bruce Alpert at the Times Picayune has the story. (Credit James Gill for “Dollar Bill”)
Jefferson wants Ellis to reverse an earlier ruling in which he refused to grant a change of venue from Virginia to Washington D.C. on grounds that the government, in the view of congressman’s attorneys, chose Virginia because it has a smaller proportion of African-American jurors. Ellis said he found no evidence that the government had manipulated to hold the trial in Virginia , but Jefferson ‘s lawyers said it’s impossible to know that without questioning government prosecutors and reviewing their emails and other material.
The New Orleans congressman, who faces charges of bribery, racketeering and conspiracy, also wants the judge to compel the Justice Department to use international legal treaties to compel testimony from three witnesses, including Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president of Nigeria , and a Nigerian businessman, to answer questions in a legal deposition.
