The Sierra Club issues a PR promoting House Bill 842 / Senate Bill 2569

Jackson, Mississippi As the movement against the Kemper County coal plant continues to grow, Mississippi State Representative Jeff Guice (R-Ocean Springs) and Senator Albert Butler (D-Port Gibson) have introduced bills to repeal last year’s legislation authorizing Mississippi Power Company to issue bonds and force customers to pay for them. The law enabled Mississippi Power to issue up to $1 billion in bonds to offset the skyrocketing cost overruns at the Kemper County coal plant, an experimental facility that is currently months behind schedule and more than double its original cost estimates.

“One year after the Legislature was misled by Mississippi Power on the true costs of the Kemper boondoggle, the chickens have come home to roost,” said Louie Miller, state director of the Mississippi Sierra Club. “Since last year, Mississippi Power has taken us deeper down the rabbit hole, with the Kemper plant’s price tag now exceeding $5 billion dollars, making Kemper the most expensive coal-fired power plant ever built in the United States on a per kilowatt basis. Hard working Mississippi families should not have to pay for the bad business decisions of Mississippi Power.”

The 2013 legislation was filed just days after the Mississippi Public Service Commission announced a settlement agreement with Mississippi Power to resolve disputed rate increases to cover the runaway costs of the plant. The Mississippi State Legislature approved the legislation, and Governor Phil Bryant then signed it into law. The new law gave Mississippi Power the authority to issue up to $1 billion in bonds to cover cost overruns at the Kemper plant, to be financed through a separate charge on customers’ monthly electric bills. 1. Finally the damn has a leak. The Southern Company may have the biggest scam going that the people of Mississippi have ever been plagued with. How can what has been allowed stand when all was a lie? You will never make me believe they thought this lab experiment was ever going to be constructed for the original low amount. Now that the total cost is more than twice that amount and rising every time they report are we to just accept it as a simple error in the estimating department? What really boils my blood more than anything is the hired lobbyist Haley Barbour traveling around the state telling all who will listen to his dribble that Kemper is an economic wonder and is our future way of diversification. Of course we all know he is the real reason we are now saddled with this boondoggle because he made it happen politically and continues to profit from his high paid whoring for the Southern Company. I would bet you anything he does not lobby for one single natural gas producer.

  2. BB – That leak in the damn has been visable for anyone who had any sense to see for a long time. I want all of the idiots that supported that hogg to be aware of what they helped him do to this States’ citizens. Shame on you all!
I am so sick of hearing how “wonderful” that hogg was for our State. I passed a car the other day that had a sticker on it that said “Thank you Haley”. Pshhh – Thanks for what???? My thoughts are that he and the Southern Company should be run out of Mississippi on a rail. I hope that this thing comes back and bites them on the behind. He should be indicted just like his pals Bill Walker, Snotty Toddy Walker, Jo the Blow Zeigler and Tina Bo-bina Hebert. They are all made of the same cloth. God Bless Mississippi!
