Gumbo replaces mumbo-jumbo as  Obama taps New Orleans native Lisa Jackson to lead Environmental Protection Agency

NEWSMAKER JACKSONLisa Perez Jackson… grew up…in New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward…where her mother lived until Hurricane Katrina…[and]…was first in her class at St. Mary’s Dominican High School in New Orleans in 1979.

Jackson graduated summa cum laude from Tulane University, with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, before leaving Louisiana to get her master’s degree in chemical engineering from Princeton University…

As part of Obama’s energy and environment teamshe joins Steven Chu, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, who was named secretary of energy; Nancy Sutley, the deputy mayor for energy and environment in Los Angeles, picked to lead the White House Council on Environmental Quality; and Carol Browner, who served as EPA administrator in the Clinton administration, in the newly created post of assistant to the president for energy and climate change.

“In the 21st century, we know that the future of our economy and national security is inextricably linked to one challenge: energy, ” Obama said. “The team that I have assembled here today is uniquely suited to meet the great challenges of this defining moment.”

We may not be losing Louisiana much longer!

I drove my mother, her sister and my stepfather out of New Orleans to Shreveport not realizing that would be the last time my mother would see her house the way she left it…The Katrina experience made me realize that you can’t fight; you have to accept what God has in store for you. I truly believe that God gave us this world and we have a moral obligation not to turn around and give the next generations a trash heap…

The New York Times reports Jackson lives with her husband, Kenny Jackson, and their two sons in East Windsor, N.J...

… an avid cook, her signature dish — gumbo — is a tribute to her Louisiana roots. … renowned for her annual Mardi Gras party, which she has not thrown since Hurricane Katrina devastated her hometown in 2005.

Jackson’s appointment signals environmentalist it’s time to let the good times roll. Maybe she’ll resume her annual Mardi Gras party this year.

  1. I imagine it will not be too hard to get a Mardi Gras party going in the White House. It would be great if we can save our Coastal footprint.

    Nowdy I thought you might enjoy a link to an online yearbook from a New Orleans school. These kids are really bright and well spoken. They were Seniors the year Katrina hit and this yearbook was used to give them a vehicle to come together as a class despite the Hurricane.

  3. I like that Dominican HS pedigree Nowdy. The girls that went there always seems to come out the other side sharp and frosty. Plus I’m partial to Dominican Nuns, I was whipped enough by them when I was a kid that some of it stuck. 😉
